Acid Reflux & Digestion – 7 Steps To Better Digestion

Improve Digestion To Cure Acid RefluxWhen looking for natural cures for acid reflux, why not look for ways to improve your overall digestion? Reports are that 70 million people suffer from digestive problems such as acid reflux, heartburn, GERDS, bloating, constipation or indigestion.

Many of these problems can be eliminated or reduced by digestive enzymes or by simply taking some diet changing steps:

#1. H2o (Water!)
Water flushes waste and toxins out of your system and gets things moving if you know what I mean. It is known that lack of water intake is a primary cause of constipation and must be increased if you are taking any kind of over the counter treatment for constipation. And don’t forget that fruits and veggies are up to 90% water.

#2. Fiber
Dietary fiber adds bulk and helps move food more quickly through the intestines. But don’t overdo it at first! Work up to a target of 25 grams a day. A good starting point is a high-fiber breakfast cereal. Remember to use a milk substitute if milk aggravates your acid reflux. Ditch the white bread for whole wheat. The more grains, the better. Snack on strawberries, blueberries, dried apricots and dried plums.

#3. Remember Your Mother Saying Chew Your Food
She was right. Sometimes we tend to gulp our food and along with food we gulp air. So avoid snacking on the run, talking while eating, drinking from a straw, drinking carbonated drinks, eat with your mouth shut (another mom thing) and chew each bite.

#4. Watch Out For Milk
The National Institute of Health believes up to 50 million Americans are lactose intolerant. If you are one of those, cut down on milk, yogurt and other dairy products. If cutting down doesn’t help, switch to soy or lactose-free foods.

#5 Just Don’t Eat It
You know which foods or drinks cause your reflux or other digestion problems. Whether it be coffee, alcohol, chocolate, thick sauces, fatty foods or fried foods, just give them up. Your heartburn may not be caused by specific foods but rather too much food at once or when you eat. Try avoiding huge meals and eating right before bed.

#6 Get On Your Feet
Exercise is known to help gas pass through the digestive tract quicker, even a short walk. At the same time, you will want to wait 30 minutes after eating to avoid aggravating your acid reflux.

#7 Consider a Supplement
You need certain enzymes in your stomach for proper digestion. If you can’t totally control your stress or bad eating habits, you may want to consider a natural supplement. In addition aging and antibiotics are uncontrollable causes of diminished enzymes. Healthy Choice Naturals has one of the most comprehensive natural digestive aids available on the market. So if you want to increase your digestive enzymes to end your digestive problems today, try Ultra-Zymes.

I just recently found out that I have silent acid reflux so I don’t get the heart burn just the extremely sore throat and other issues. I find it extremely confusing with the information I have been reading. Wondering if you can clarify a few things as follows:

are lemons ok? I heard lemon water is really good for acid reflex and then others say no.
are almonds and macadamin nuts okay to eat? I was told peacans and walnuts are not good but then I read no nuts. What do nuts do? is it the fat?
I drink almond milk — is this ok?
    Coconut water — ok?
    All seeds — ok?
hummus — ok or no because of the garlic? what does garlic do?
red, yellow & green peppers, eggplant — ok?
are avocadoes bad because of the fat?
    Onions and leeks?
Really appreciate your feedback and if you know of any good books to refer that would be most appreciated.

    Thanks alot!

My experience is that tolerance to various foods varies from person to person and even changes over time. For example, onions used to cause me terrible reflux however, I tend to handle them much better now. Once I got my reflux under control, I am not as susceptible to problem foods.
